Private Label vs White Label Skincare: Which Is Right for Your Brand?
White label means ready formulas, private label means fully custom development. Costs, timelines, minimums and how to choose the right path for your brand.
If you are planning a skincare brand, “private label” and “white label” are the two paths every manufacturer will offer you, and they are very different products wearing similar names. Choosing the right one determines your budget, your launch timeline and how defensible your brand will be. Here is the honest breakdown.
The definitions, without the marketing fog
White label means the formula already exists. It is finished, stable, tested and EU-compliant; you choose it from our range, we fill it in the packaging and format you prefer, and your label carries your brand. You are choosing a proven formula, not designing one.
Private label means fully custom development: everything is created for your brand, from the formula to the packaging. Texture, actives, fragrance, container, artwork, all yours, built around your vision.
White label: speed and low risk
White label is the fastest route to market. Because the formula is finished and already EU-compliant, there is no R&D phase and you can realistically launch in weeks. At Laboratori Italiani the white label catalogue counts 55 ready formulas built on plant stem-cell technology, natural actives and biotechnology, available from 500 pieces per reference in any packaging you choose.
The trade-off: the base formula is not exclusive. Your brand, your packaging, your story and your marketing carry the differentiation; the formula itself can appear in other brands’ products too.
White label is ideal for: testing a market, launching a first product line quickly, salons and clinics creating a retail line, and gifting or promotional collections.
Private label: ownership and brand equity
Custom development takes longer (typically 5 to 7 months from brief to finished goods) and requires a real R&D investment, though at our laboratory that investment is deducted from your first production order. In exchange, you get a product nobody else can sell: your texture, your actives, your packaging, engineered together and tested as one.
This is how defensible beauty brands are built. When a customer loves a custom lip oil texture, they can only get it from you.
Private label is ideal for: brands with a clear vision, founders building for the long term, established businesses extending into beauty, and any product where texture or performance is the story. Some products are custom by nature: lip care is a good example.
Side-by-side comparison
| White label | Private label | |
|---|---|---|
| Formula | Ready, shared | Custom, exclusively yours |
| Packaging | Your choice of format and components | Fully customizable, custom moulds possible |
| Time to launch | Weeks | ~5–7 months |
| Investment | Production only | R&D + production (R&D deducted from production) |
| Minimums | From 500 pcs per reference | Depends on the project, indicatively from 500–1,000 units |
| Differentiation | Brand, packaging and marketing | Product itself |
| EU compliance | Already done | Handled in house during development |
The smart sequence: start white, go private
Many successful brands do both, in order. Launch with white label references to validate your audience and generate cash flow, then reinvest into custom development for your hero product. Working with a manufacturer that offers both paths means you never have to switch suppliers mid-growth.
How it works at Laboratori Italiani
We offer exactly these two paths and nothing in between: a white label catalogue of 55 ready formulas, and fully custom private label development where every proposal is built around your vision. Both are EU-compliant by design, with CPSR, PIF and CPNP handled in house, and made in our Italian laboratory.
